Psychotherapy

As a therapist my favorite way to work with people is somatically and experientially. I believe the wisdom of the body has all of the information we need. Tuning in more deeply helps us with the insight and awarenss that enables us to make meaningful change. I will lead you in the process of tapping into the resource of the body to access the information you need for healing.

Our first session together will be about me getting to know you better. Depending on your goals for therapy I will ask guiding questions to help you share the information you want me to know.

Our next sessions together might involve a brief check-in, identifying the focus for the day and moving into the work. I utilize a variety of techniques detailed below:

Somatic Therapy

I was trained in SomEx which is a somatic experiential modality that was developed by the Experiential Healing Center in Memphis TN. This refers to a style of therapy that combines somatic (felt sense in the body) and experiential work, while also attending to the relationship between therapist and client. Through the SomEx process, trauma may be unlocked in the body and then emotionally processed while being physically discharged and healed. This can be an effective tool for many and goes beyond ‘talk therapy’ alone.

Experiential therapy

Psychodrama and experiential therapy describes technique that use expressive tools and activities such as role playing, props, music or guided imagery in various forms to create an earlier experience that feels unresolved. Psychodrama is a more specific modality that was developed by Dr. Jacob Moreno and is considered an active and creative approach to healing. The use of metaphor and play are powerful components to both psychodrama and experiential work and often help facilitate deep healing.

Brainspotting

Brainspotting is a modality that locates points in the clients visual field to help access unprocessed trauma in the subcortical brain. Brainspotting (BSP) was discovered in 2003 by Dr David Grand, PhD who states that ‘where you look affects how you feel’. Brainspotting can be an effective way to work with a variety of emotional and somatic conditions and address troublesome emotions such as anxiety and depression.

We might end our session together with a brief meditative practice and discuss ways in which you can continue the work at home.
